Education is definitely one of the main factors which influence the general development of any community. Its effectiveness indicates a lot of things and affects the level of life on a certain territory. It may cause progress or regress of the economy, ecological conditions, and many other important niches. However, this sphere is facing many problems nowadays, and in the majority of countries, the system of education is considered to be non-effective. It seems that the only way of coping with this situation is to reform it radically. Nevertheless, this step demands lots of money and efforts. That is why young people sometimes get very poor knowledge and skills which bring them no benefits in the future. In this article, we present some examples of these problems and possible solutions for them.
The modern technology at schools is still a highly discussed issue, and there is no exact answer if it is useful or does harm to the quality of students’ learning. It is true that many young people spend their time playing games on smartphones or chatting with their friends instead of paying attention to a lecture. They are not concentrated on the subject as devices seem to be more amusing and attractive for them.
On the other hand, modern gadgets may play a beneficial role in the process of studying. For example, some interactional activities may be provided by a teacher thanks to them. Pupils can also solve some tasks more effectively and quickly when using devices. Probably, the only way to tackle this problem is to find a balance between banning and applying technology at class. It is not possible to make the education system independent from the technical progress, so it is better to find some helpful ways and get benefit from it.
Leadership and Followership at Schools
Nowadays, there are many issues in the communication between young people at schools. In many cases, students are divided into leaders and followers, which surely has a negative impact on the whole learning process. Sometimes such pacemakers have even greater authority than a teacher and can influence the general mood of a group. It also leads to an inappropriate hierarchy in the school community where all teenagers should be equal and have a right to their personal position.
While being under the impact of someone with a bigger authority, a young person cannot develop his or her individuality. That is why some of his or her talents and skills may be poor, and this student will not be able to make their own decisions and be self-dependent after graduation.
Without any doubts, the majority of students have accounts in social networks and spend a great part of their free time online. Sometimes even teachers use these technologies in order to develop themselves and improve the class work. For example, different studying activities may be provided via social media. It is a well-known and understandable method for students which can make them more interested in study. In some cases, pedagogues join communities full of useful tutorials and materials for teaching. It helps them to find the most effective ways of work.
However, besides all their benefits, social networks may do a lot of harm to young people, as they sometimes even become addicted to them and cannot study successfully because of poor concentration and desire to spend all their time online.
Student Assessment System
It is true that the most effective and productive systems of education do not include any marks and other ways of estimating students’ knowledge and skills. For example, we can take a look at schools in Finland where children do not know about grades, but have excellent results in different subjects. However, in many schools around the globe, students still have to work for grades as they are the main method of estimating their skills. Sometimes, this system can be unfair and does not present any true results. It makes young people work not for getting knowledge but for good grades, which may lead to worse practical skills and poor motivation.
Lack of Creative Tasks
Undoubtedly, one of the major problems which do not let students develop their skills and knowledge effectively is the lack of creative assignments. Usually, young people have to tackle theory and do no practical tasks. However, working on a project and conducting a survey may bring much more positive outcomes than learning information from the textbooks. It is essential for the improvement of students’ analytical and critical thinking. Moreover, they learn how to find an unusual and efficient approach to a certain task.
All in all, there are a lot of present-day problems in the system of education which are similar in the majority of countries. Even developed and rich countries sometimes have to face such issues and cope with them.
Certainly, this sphere is very important, and it indicates the country’s success in many other fields of human activity. How can these problems be solved? Many important steps should be taken in order to get rid of them. Moreover, a lot of human and financial resources are necessary for it.
- A good plan and preparation for the educational reforms are needed first of all. It is impossible to solve many global problems in a single step and get positive results. The group of people should work on it and predict all consequences.
- The next stage is to follow these reforms and change some points in the system of education.
- Then, some amendments should be added, especially if some inappropriate outcomes take place. All innovations should be monitored and regulated. Education has to be constantly improved according to the technological progress.
